Proctor, Richard Anthony

Proctor, Richard Anthony, Astronom, geb. 23. März 1837 in Chelsea, gest. 12. Sept. 1888 in New York, veröffentlichte in den »Monthly Notices« der Royal Astronomical Society in London zahlreiche Untersuchungen über die Oberfläche und Rotationsdauer des Mars, über Saturn und sein System, die Verteilung der Fixsterne und Nebel im Weltraum, die Venusdurchgänge etc. Seine zahlreichen populären Schriften haben weite Verbreitung gefunden. Seit 1878 gab er die Zeitschrift »Knowledge« heraus, auch schrieb er eine geschätzte Anleitung zum Whistspiel (1885).
