Permutation

Permutation (lat.), Vertauschung, Versetzung; in der Mathematik versteht man unter P. erstens jede Veränderung der Reihenfolge einer bestimmten Anzahl gegebener Dinge (Elemente), also die Tätigkeit (Operation), bei der jedes der gegebenen Elemente durch irgend eines unter ihnen ersetzt wird und zwar derart, daß auch umgekehrt jedes der gegebenen Elemente den ursprünglichen Platz eines der Elemente einnimmt. Man sagt in diesem Falle, daß man auf die Elemente eine P. oder Substitution ausführt; z. B. führt man eine P. der vier Elemente a, b, c, d aus, wenn man diese der Reihe nach durch c, d, a, b ersetzt. Zweitens nennt man P. auch jedes Ergebnis einer solchen Vertauschung, es sind also acdb und cdab Permutationen von abed. Die Lehre von den Permutationen bildet einen Zweig der Kombinationslehre (s. d.) und der Substitutionentheorie (s. d.).
