Pauncefote

Pauncefote (spr. pānßfut), Sir Julian, brit. Diplomat, geb. 1828, gest. 24. Mai 1902, wurde 1852 Rechtsanwalt in London und siedelte 1862 nach Hongkong über. Er ward hier 1865–69 Generalanwalt (Attorney-General), 1869 Oberrichter, 1873 Oberrichter auf den Leewardinseln und 1874 als Rechtsbeistand des Unterstaatssekretärs ins Kolonialministerium berufen. 1876 wurde er in gleicher Eigenschaft im Auswärtigen Amt angestellt, 1882 zum ständigen Unterstaatssekretär darin befördert, 1889 als Gesandter nach Washington geschickt und 1893 zum Botschafter daselbst erhoben. Im Sommer 1899 vertrat er England auf der Friedenskonferenz im Haag. Über sein Verhalten vor dem spanischen Krieg entspann sich 1902 eine Kontroverse zwischen ihm und dem deutschen Botschafter in Washington.
