Azevēdo

Azevēdo, Manoel Antonio Alvares de, brasil. Dichter, geb. 1831 in São Paulo, gest. 1852, schrieb, während er (1848–51) die Rechte studierte, eine Fülle romantischer, teils idealistischer, schwermütig elegischer, teils realistischer, bittern Humor zur Schau tragender Gedichte im Geiste Heines, Byrons und Mussets. Sie wurden veröffentlicht als »Lyra dos vinte annos« von ihm selbst (5. Aufl. 1884) und nach seinem Tode von seinem Vater als »Obras« (1853, 2 Bde.) und »Obras completas« in 3 Bänden (1863 u. ö.); darin auch Prosaschriften und drei dramatische Szenen: »Bohemios«, »Macario« und »Noite na taverna«. Nächst Gonçalves Dias war A., dessen hohe Begabung unleugbar ist, früher der gelesenste brasilische Dichter. Val. F. Wolf, Le Brésil littéraire (Berl. 1863).
