Omaha, Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Douglas des nordamerikan. Staates Nebraska und größte Stadt des Staates, am Westufer des Missouri, über den hier drei Brücken führen, Knotenpunkt von zwölf Eisenbahnen, hat ein schönes Bundesgebäude, Gerichtshaus, Stadthaus, Versammlungshalle (Coliseum), Ausstellungsgebäude, Hochschule (mit Turm), zwei Universitäten und 1890: 140,482, 1900: 102,555 Einw., unter letztern 23,552 im Ausland (5522 in Deutschland) Geborne. Die Industrie weist (1900) 838 Betriebe mit 7537 Arbeitern und 43,168,876 Doll. Produktionswert auf und ist besonders hervorragend durch große Schmelzwerke, Eisenbahnwerkstätten, Maschinenfabriken, Ziegeleien etc. Die großartige Versandschlächterei (1900: 5 Betriebe mit 5938 Arbeitern und 67,716,724 Doll. Produktionswert), die nur der von Chicago nachsteht, hat ihren Sitz in Südomaha. Der Handel vertreibt namentlich Getreide (mächtige Elevatoren), Materialwaren, Ackergeräte, Holz. O. wurde 1855 gegründet.
