Montepulciano

Montepulciano (spr. -tschāno), Kreishauptstadt in der ital. Provinz Siena, 605 m ü. M., auf einer Anhöhe des Toskanischen Subapennin, über der Chiana und an der Eisenbahn Empoli-Chiusi, ist Bischofssitz, hat Kirchen und Paläste vom 14.–17. Jahrh., darunter die Kathedrale mit einem von Donatello und Michelozzo ausgeführten Grabdenkmal und die schöne Kuppelkirche Madonna di S. Biagio außerhalb der Stadt (1518 von Ant. da Sangallo dem Ältern begonnen), ein altes Kastell, ein Stadthaus (14. Jahrh.), Gymnasium, Technische Schule, Bibliothek, Sammlung etruskischer Altertümer, ausgezeichneten Weinbau, Gewinnung von Seidenraupeneiern und Öl und (1901) 2930 (als Gemeinde 15,399) Einw. 10 km östlich der kleine See von M., dessen Abfluß die Chiana bildet. M. ist der Geburtsort des Kardinals Bellarmin und des Gelehrten und Dichters Angelo Ambrogini, der sich danach Politianus nannte (s. Poliziano).
