Livery

Livery (engl., spr. liwwĕri), die Gesamtheit der das Wahlrecht genießenden Mitglieder (liverymen) der großen Gilden in der City von London. L. Companies (eigentlich Livreegesellschaften), so genannt, weil ihre Mitglieder die Livree der betreffenden Gilden tragen, obwohl sie jetzt zumeist den betreffenden Gewerben fernstehen, heißen die alten Gilden selbst, von denen es zwölf große gibt, die meist sehr reich und im Besitz großer Innungshallen sind. Ihre Einkünfte verwenden sie zum Teil zu wohltätigen Zwecken; Weiteres s. London, S. 700.
