Kenyon

Kenyon (spr. kénnjön), Frederic George, Philolog, geb. 15. Jan. 1863 in London, erhielt seine Ausbildung am Winchester College und New College in Oxford und wurde 1888 Fellow am Magdalen-College daselbst, 1889 Assistent der Handschriftenabteilung des Britischen Museums, 1894 Ehrendoktor der Universität Halle, 1895 Doct. Lit. der Universität Durham. Er ist hochverdient als Entzifferer von Papyrushandschriften (s. Papyrusrollen) und durch die Entdeckung und Herausgabe mehrerer altgriechischer Werke, so des »Staates der Athener« von Aristoteles (Lond. 1891, 3. Aufl. 1892; zuletzt Berl. 1903; engl. Übersetzung, Lond. 1891), der »Mimen« des Herodas (Lond. 1891; dazu »Some new fragments of Herodas«, Leipz. 1901), zweier Reden des Hypereides (Lond. 1893), der Gedichte des Bakchylides (das. 1897). Außerdem gab er heraus: »Classical texts kr om Papyri in the British Museum« (1891, darunter den Herodas); »Catalogue of Greek Papyri in the British Museum« (1893--98, 2 Bde.); »Our Bible and the ancient manuscripts« (1895, 3. Aufl. 1898); »Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning« (1897); »The palaeography of Greek Papyri« (1899); »Handbook to textual criticism of the New Testament« (1901).
