Gomphrēna

Gomphrēna L. (Kugelamarant, Amarantine), Gattung der Amarantazeen, mehr oder weniger stark behaarte, ein- oder mehrjährige Kräuter mit gegenständigen, sitzenden oder kurzgestielten, ganzrandigen Blättern und end- oder achselständigen, meist kugelrunden oder ovalen Blütenständen mit trockenhäutigen, prächtig gefärbten Brakteen. Etwa 90 Arten, meist in Mittel- und Südamerika, einige in Australien. G. globosa L. (rote Immortelle), einjährig, mit 30–40 cm hohem, sehr ästigem, gabelteiligem Stengel und länglichen, weichhaarigen Blättern, in den warmen Strichen aller Erdteile, wird der schönen roten oder weißen Blüten halber, die ihre Farben nach dem Trocknen behalten, kultiviert.
