Ferrel, William, Meteorolog, geb. 29. Jan. 1817 auf einer Farm in Virginia, gest. 18. Sept. 1891 in Maywood (Kansas), war zuerst Lehrer in Tennessee, trat 1857 in die Redaktion des »Nautical Almanac«, wurde 1867 in die Küstenvermessungsbehörde zu Washington und 1882 zum Professor am Signalamt berufen. Von großem Werte waren seine Forschungen über den allgemeinen Kreislauf der Luft um die Erde, seine Theorie der Wirbelstürme und Tornados, seine richtige Schätzung der ablenkenden Kraft, vermöge deren über der Erde sich bewegende Körper infolge der Drehung der Erde die Neigung haben, von geradlinigen Bahnen abzuweichen, und welche Bedeutung diese Kraft für die Meteorologie hat, seine Untersuchungen über Flut und Ebbe u. a. m. Auch erfand er einen Apparat, der den Eintritt der Gezeiten vorher angibt. Er schrieb: »Popular treatise on the winds, monsoons, cyclones etc.« (New York 1889,2. Aufl. 1893).
