Wilajet Adrianopel, in fieberreicher Gegend, unweit der Mündung der Maritza, hat eine Zitadelle aus byzantinischer Zeit, mehrere Schulen und 7–8000 meist griech. Einwohner, die Handel mit Wolle, Baumwolle, Leder, Wachs, Getreide, ferner Schiffahrt und Fischerei treiben. E. in Sitz eines Erzbischofs. 15 km nördlich liegen ausgedehnte Trümmer der bis ins Mittelalter bestehenden Stadt Trajanopolis.
