Counsel (engl., spr. kaunßĕl, abgekürzt aus counsellor, Rat), Benennung der englischen Advokaten, nämlich der Barristers (s.d.), die als Rechts beistände Rat über Rechtsfragen erteilen und vor den Gerichtshöfen gehört werden, während die Anwalte, die Solicitors (s.d.), als Partei vertreter die Prozeßhandlungen an Stelle ihrer Klienten vornehmen und nur ausnahmsweise plaidieren dürfen. Der Titel King's C. ist eine Auszeichnung, die dem so Geehrten den Vorrang vor seinen Standesgenossen und das Recht gibt, einen seidenen Talar (silk-gown) zu tragen. Aus den Counsels gehen die Generalanwalte und Generalfiskale, die Richter, ja selbst die Lord-Kanzler hervor (s. Attorney). Vgl.
