Conkling, Roscoe, nordamerikan. Staatsmann, geb. 30. Okt. 1829 in Albany (New York), gest. 18. April 1888, studierte die Rechte und ward 1849 zum Attorney von Oneida County ernannt. 1858 wurde er zum Mayor von Utica und 1859 zum Mitgliede des Kongresses gewählt. Er trat mit Energie und Erfolg für eine entschlossene Kriegführung während des Bürgerkrieges ein. 1867 ward er Mitglied des Senats für New York, in dem er Grants korrupte Verwaltung und seine Politik gegen den Süden verteidigte. 1876 wurde er von den strengen Republikanern als Kandidat für die Präsidentschaftswahl aufgestellt, erhielt aber nicht die Majorität. Wegen seiner Opposition gegen Garfield verlor er 1881 seine Stellung als Senator, dagegen ernannte ihn der Präsident Arthur 1882 zum Mitgliede des obersten Gerichtshofs.
