Wheeler

Wheeler (spr. ŭīler), George Montagne, amerikan. Reisender, geb. 9. Okt. 1842 zu Grafton in Massachusetts, Offizier der Unionsarmee von Nordamerika, war 1869–79 Leiter der vom Kriegsministerium ausgerüsteten Expeditionen zur Erforschung und Aufnahme der westlichen Territorien. Nach seiner Rückkehr zum Kapitän ernannt, trat er 1888 in den Ruhestand. Die Ergebnisse seiner Expedition wurden veröffentlicht im »Annual report upon the geographical explorations and surveys west of the 100. meridian etc.« (Wash. 1874–80) und in dem »Report upon United States geographical surveys west of the 100. meridian etc.« (das. 1874–81, 7 Bde.).
