Tooke

Tooke (spr. tuk), 1) Thomas, engl. Nationalökonom, geb. 1774 in St. Petersburg, gest. 26. Febr. 1858 auf seinem Landsitz in Spring Garden, Sohn des Historikers William T. (gest. 1820), der lange als Geistlicher in St. Petersburg gewirkt hatte. Thomas T. erwarb sich als Teilnehmer eines großen Handelshauses reiche Erfahrungen im Handels- und Finanzwesen und war von 1820, wo er die berühmte »Merchant's petition in favour of free trade« verfaßte, bis zu seinem Tod als eifriger Vertreter des Freihandels an allen kommerziellen Enqueten und an der Gesetzgebung auf allen Gebieten wirtschaftlicher Natur beteiligt. Er veröffentlichte eine sechsbändige »History of prices« (Lond. 1838–57, Bd. 5 u. 6 von Newmarch bearbeitet; deutsch von Asher, Dresd. 1858–59, 2 Bde.), die den englischen Handel von 1793–1856 schildert; »Inquiry into the currency principle« (1844); »On the bank charter act of 1844« (1855).
