Thénard (spr. -ár), Louis Jacques, Chemiker, geb. 4. Mai 1777 zu Louptière bei Nogent-sur-Seine, gest. 20. Juni 1857 in Paris, studierte in Paris, war bis 1837 Professor der Chemie an der Polytechnischen Schule und bis 1840 am Collège de France und an der Faculté des sciences und wurde 1833 Pair von Frankreich. T. entdeckte mit Gay-Lussac das Bor, die Alkalisuperoxyde und das Baryumsuperoxyd, sie stellten zuerst die Alkalimetalle ohne Anwendung einer galvanischen Batterie dar und bildeten die Elementaranalyse aus. T. arbeitete auch über die zusammengesetzten Äther und die Galle, entdeckte das Wasserstoffsuperoxyd und das Kobaltblau sowie eine neue Methode der Bleiweißfabrikation etc. In Sens wurde ihm ein Denkmal errichtet. Er schrieb: »Traité de chimie élémentaire théorique et pratique« (1813–1816, 4 Bde.; 6. Aufl., Par. 1836, 5 Bde.; deutsch von Fechner, Leipz. 1825–30, 7 Bde.) und (mit Gay-Lussac) »Recherches physico-chimiques« (Par. 1811, 2 Bde.).
