Stellaland

Stellaland, Landschaft in Südafrika, südlich des Molopo, zum größern Teil (12,500 qkm) zum Britisch-Betschuanenland-Protektorat, zum kleinern (3000 qkm) zur Transvaal-Kolonie gehörig. 1882 von dem Korannahäuptling Massouw für geleistete Hilfe an die Buren abgetreten und als Republik proklamiert, wurde auf Einspruch Englands die obige Teilung 1884 vollzogen. Jetzt ist alles britischer Besitz. Die frühere Hauptstadt Vryburg liegt an der Eisenbahn Kimberley-Sambesifluß. Der Name S. bedeutet nach dem Missionar Merensky das »stille Land«, d. h. das im Frieden besetzte.
