Sandákan, Hauptstadt von Britisch-Nordborneo, an der Einfahrt in die Bai von S., hat prot. Kirche, chinesisches Joßhaus (Bethaus), Moschee, Hospital, Magazine, Bankgeschäfte und 5000 Einw. (2/3 Chinesen), die lebhaften Handel treiben. S. ist auch der Hafen (1903: 64 deutsche Schiffe von 49,105 Ton.) für das nahe Elopura (s. d.) und ist Sitz eines deutschen Vizekonsuls.
