Rust, 1) Friedrich Wilhelm, Violinspieler und Komponist, geb. 6. Juli 1739 in Wörlitz bei Dessau, gest. 28. März 1796 in Dessau, studierte in Halle die Rechte, ging aber dann zur Musik über und bildete sich 1763–64 in Potsdam unter Leitung von Franz Benda sowie später in Italien im Verkehr mit Tartini und Pugnani im Violinspiel aus. 1766–75 wirkte er als herzoglicher Musikdirektor in Dessau. R. war ein virtuoser Lautenspieler, aber auch ein vortrefflicher Violinist; von seinen Kompositionen sind 2 Violinsonaten durch Ferd. David und E. Singer, eine Klaviersonate und eine dritte Violinsonate von seinem Enkel Wilhelm R. nen herausgegeben worden. Vgl. Hosäus, Friedrich Wilhelm R. (Dessau 1881).

2) Wilhelm, Organist und Musikschriftsteller, Enkel des vorigen, geb. 15. Aug. 1822 in Dessau, gest. 2. Mai 1892 in Leipzig, erhielt seine Ausbildung durch Friedr. Schneider in Dessau, lebte seit 1849 in Berlin, wurde 1861 Organist der Lukaskirche, 1870 Lehrer am Sternschen Konservatorium und begründete den Berliner Bach-Verein. 1878 folgte er einem Rufe nach Leipzig als Organist der Thomaskirche und Lehrer am Konservatorium, 1880 wurde er daselbst Kantor der Thomasschule. 1885 erhielt er den Professortitel. R. war seit 1853 einer der Hauptredakteure der Gesamtausgabe der Werke Seb. Bachs. Als Komponist trat R. hauptsächlich mit geistlichen Gesängen auf.
