Redmond

Redmond, John E., irischer Politiker, geb. 1856 als Sohn eines Parlamentsabgeordneten, erzogen in Clongowes, studierte in Dublin und wurde 1886 Rechtsanwalt. Schon 1881 ins Unterhaus gewählt, trat er der Homerulepartei bei und beteiligte sich aufs eifrigste an deren Agitationen innerhalb und außerhalb des Parlaments. 1886 unternahm er zu diesem Zweck eine Reise nach Australien, um die dort lebenden Irländer für die Sache der Partei zu gewinnen, und brachte von dort große Geldsummen heim. 1888 gehörte er zu den Angeklagten in dem Parnellprozeß. Bei der Spaltung der irischen Partei im Dezember 1890 blieb R. Parnell treu, wurde 1891 nach Parnells Tode zum Führer seiner Anhänger und 1900 von den wieder vereinigten irischen Parlamentsmitgliedern zum Führer der nationalistischen Partei gewählt.
