Balkar (Malkarzen), türk. Volksstamm an den Terekzuflüssen Tschegem und Tscherek, am Nordostabhang des Kaukasus im russisch-kaukasischen Terekgebiet, 4500 Köpfe stark. Sie sind seit 1822 russische Untertanen, behielten aber ihre alte Verfassung. Teils Christen, teils Mohammedaner, betreiben sie Gartenbau, Viehzucht und fertigen Seidenzeuge, Tuch u. Filz.
