Pundit

Pundit (Pandit), ind. Titel für solche, die sich gelehrten, namentlich religiösen Studien widmen, etwa unserm Doktor entsprechend. Insbesondere werden »Punditen« eingeborne Inder genannt, die, von den Engländern zu Geodäten ausgebildet, in Tibet und andern für Europäer schwer zugänglichen Ländern Aufnahmen ausführen. Ihre Namen werden in der Regel geheim gehalten. Die bedeutendsten waren: Mohammedi Hamid. der über den Karakorumpaß nach Jarkand ging (1863–64); der berühmte Naing Singh (s. d.), der 1865–66 und 1874–75 erfolgreiche Reisen in Tibet ausführte; Mirza Sudja, der 1868–69 über den Kleinen Pamir nach Kaschgar und Leh ging; Hai der Schah, der 1870 ff. nach Faizabad im Oxustal vordrang, später auch Bochara und Ostturkistan bereiste.
