Prophylaxis

Prophylaxis (griech.), die »Verhütung« von Krankheiten, ist von um so größerer Bedeutung, als sehr viele Krankheiten, wenn sie einmal den Menschen befallen haben, in ihrem Verlauf weder unterbrochen, noch durch ärztliche Kunst verkürzt werden können. Die allgemeine P. ist erst in neuerer Zeit zu einem eignen Wissenszweig ausgebildet worden, denn alle Aufgaben, welche die öffentliche und private Gesundheitspflege oder Hygiene zu erfüllen hat, bezwecken eine möglichst umfassende P. Im engern Sinne bezeichnet man gewisse Heilverfahren als prophylaktische, z. B. einen Luftröhrenschnitt bei drohender, aber noch nicht eingetretener Erstickungsgefahr, auch reicht man Chinin bei Reisenden in Malariagegenden, um der Erkrankung an Malaria vorzubeugen. Vgl.
