Paragraph

Paragraph (griech.), eigentlich jedes daneben- oder beigeschriebene Zeichen (Linie, Punkt etc.), bei den Alten ein Zeichen, dessen sich die Grammatiker und Kritiker zur Interpunktion, zur Unterscheidung der im Drama sprechenden Personen oder auch zur Andeutung unechter Worte und Stellen in den Schriften der Klassiker bedienten. Später bezeichnete man, wie noch gegenwärtig geschieht, mit P. die in Gesetzeswerken sowie in wissenschaftlichen Schriften der bequemern Übersicht wegen gemachten, meist kleinern Abschnitte (»Satzungen«), denen man das mit fortlaufenden Ziffern numerierte Paragraphenzeichen (§) vorsetzt.
