Mfumbiro

Mfumbiro: Mfumbiro (Ufumbiro), östlichster (1° südl. Br., 29 und 30° östl. L.) der fünf Vulkankegel in der Gruppe der Virungaberge (s. d.), auf der Grenze der Wasserscheide zwischen Kongo und Nil, zwischen Albert Edward- und Kivusee, während der westlichste Gipfel ein tätiger Vulkan ist und Kirunga tscha Gongo, »Opferplatz«, heißt. Richtiger heißt der M. Muhawura. Den 1861 von Speke entdeckten M. erstieg 1894 Graf von Götzen, der südlich den dem Albert Edward-See fast gleichkommenden Kivusee (1500 m ü. M.) und auf deutschem Gebiete den kleinern, Mohazi, 60–80 km lang, 2–5 km breit, entdeckte. v. Beringe (1899/1900) gab eine neue kartographische Aufnahme der ganzen Gegend.
