Metanīlsäure (Metaamidobenzolsulfosäure) C6H4NH2.SO3H entsteht durch Reduktion von Metanitrobenzolsulfosäure mit Schwefelammonium und bildet farblose Kristalle. Wird sie diazotiert und mit Diphenylamin oder Naphthol kombiniert, so entsteht im ersten Fall Melanilgelb, im zweiten Metanilorange.
