Medeba

Medeba (das heutige Mâdeba), alte moabitische Stadt, schon im 4. Buche Mosis als Eroberung des Amoriterkönigs Sihon genannt und später im Besitz des Stammes Ruben. Im 5. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert war es Bischofssitz. Diese byzantinische Stadt, von der namentlich drei Kirchen, in deren einer 1896 vielleicht die älteste erhaltene Karte, in Mosaik Teile von Palästina und Ägypten darstellend, gefunden wurde, Tore, eine Säulenstraße etc. sich teilweise erhalten haben, scheint aus dem Material einer ältern römischen gebaut zu sein. Seit 1881 haben sich dort Christen angesiedelt, welche die Ruinen zerstören und das Material verbauen.
