Maxĭmus Confessor

Maxĭmus Confessor, gleich hervorragend als theologischer Gelehrter wie als Mann standhafter Überzeugung, geb. um 580, war kaiserlicher Sekretär zu Konstantinopel und dann Abt des benachbarten Klosters zu Chrysopolis (Skutari). Später vorzugsweise als Bestreiter der Monophysiten und Monotheleten in Nordafrika und Rom tätig, starb er 662 in der Verbannung. Trotz seiner an Aristoteles herangebildeten Dialektik war er wesentlich Mystiker (s. Mystagogische Theologie), der letzte Neuplatoniker in den Reihen der griechischen Väter. Seine Werke hat Combesis herausgegeben (Par. 1675, 2 Bde.; abgedruckt und um neu Aufgefundenes vermehrt in Mignes »Patrologie grecque«, Bd. 90 u. 91).
