Atkyns

Atkyns (spr. ättkins), Sir Robert, engl. Rechtsgelehrter und Staatsmann, geb. 1621 aus einer der ältesten Familien in Gloucester, gest. 18. Febr. 1709, wurde 1645 Rechtsanwalt, 1661 Recorder der Stadt Bristol, 1672 Richter am Court of Common Pleas, legte 1679 dies Amt nieder und zog sich auf seine Besitzungen zurück. Von dort aus suchte er vergebens 1683 durch Rechtsgutachten in dem berüchtigten Ryehouse-Prozeß zugunsten Lord Russells zu wirken und veröffentlichte nach der Revolution von 1688 seine »Defence of the late Lord Russell's innocency«, worin er der spätern Legislatur über Majestätsverbrechen den Weg vorzeichnete. 1684 verteidigte A. den wegen einer aufrührerischen Schmähschrift angeklagten Sprecher des Unterhauses, Sir Will. Williams. Nach der Vertreibung Jakobs II. wurde er 1689 zum ersten Präsidenten des Schatzkammergerichts erhoben; das Oberhaus übertrug ihm in demselben Jahre das Amt des Sprechers. 1694 legte A. seine Ämter nieder. Seine »Parliamentary and political tracts« (Lond. 1734, 2. Aufl. 1741) sind für die englische Reichs- und Verfassungsgeschichte wichtig.
