Maldon

Maldon (spr. mald'n), Stadt (municipal borough) in der engl. Grafschaft Essex, auf steiler Höhe am Einfluß des Chelmer in sein Blackwater genanntes Ästuar, hat ein altes Rathaus, eine gotische Allerheiligenkirche mit dreieckigem normannischen Turm (13. Jahrh.), eine gotische Marienkirche aus dem 17. Jahrh. (jüngst restauriert), Lateinschule, Bau landwirtschaftlicher Maschinen, Salzwerke, Malzdarren, Austernfischerei und (1901) 5565 Einw. Der Hafen ist Schiffen von 200 Ton. zugänglich. 2 km westlich die Ruinen der Prämonstratenserabtei Beleigh (1180 gegründet).
