Lawes (spr. laos), Sir John Bennet, Landwirt, geb. 28. Dez. 1814 zu Rothamsted in Hartfordshire, gest. 31. Ang. 1900, studierte in Eton und Oxford, übernahm schon mit 20 Jahren die Leitung des väterlichen Gutes zu Rothamsted und beschäftigte sich seitdem mit großem Erfolg mit Agrikulturchemie. Seit 1837 stellte er Superphosphat aus mineralischen Phosphaten dar und schuf damit eine große neue Industrie. Er errichtete große Fabriken 1843 in Deptford Creek und 1857 in Barking Creek, verkaufte aber das Düngergeschäft 1872. Zur Ausführung wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten verband er sich 1843 mit J. H. Gilbert, schuf in Rothamsted die erste landwirtschaftliche Versuchsstation und lieferte epochemachende Untersuchungen. Seit 1847 sind Berichte über diese Arbeiten in 9 Bänden erschienen. Die Landwirte Englands erbauten L. in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste um die Landwirtschaft ein Laboratorium in Rothamsted, weitere Gebäude kamen hinzu, und 1889 übergab L. sämtliche Laboratorien und Versuchsfelder einem Aufsichtsrat und bestimmte ein Kapital von 100,000 Pfd. Sterl. zur Fortführung der Arbeiten. 1882 wurde er geadelt.
