Kathai

Kathai (Katai, Chatai), eine im 13.–17. Jahrh. in Europa übliche Bezeichnung für Nordchina, hergeleitet vom Mandschurenvolk Khitan (s. d.), das bis 1125 den Norden Chinas innehatte, von den Reisenden des 13. Jahrh. (Marco Polo) für das ganze chinesische Reich gebraucht und dadurch Ursache langwieriger Mißverständnisse bezüglich seines Verhältnisses zum Begriff China.
