Indianapŏlis, Hauptstadt des nordamerikan. Staates Indiana in der Grafschaft Marion, in fruchtbarer Ebene am Zusammenfluß des Fall Creek mit dem Westarm des White River, Mittelpunkt von 18 Eisenbahnen, mit großem Hauptbahnhof (Union Depot), einem schönen Staatskapitol, Kriegerdenkmal im Circle Park (außerdem noch sechs andre Parke), Gerichtshof, Irren-, Blinden- und Taubstummenanstalt, Unionsarsenal, dem Propyläum, einem literarischen Frauenklub gehörig, einer klassischen Schule für Mädchen, Stadtbibliothek, Musikakademie, mehreren schönen Kirchen und (1900) 169,164 Einw. Die Industrie, durch die Nähe ergiebiger Kohlenfelder gefördert, zählte 1900: 1910 Betriebe mit 25,511 Arbeitern und für 63,607,579 Doll. Produkten, vor allem 7 Schlacht- und Fleischverpackungshäuser (1943 Arbeiter, Produktionswert 18,765,442 Doll.), 56 Maschinenfabriken und Gießereien (3726 Arbeiter und für 5,733,469 Doll. Produkte), 9 Getreidemühlen (3,820,373 Doll.), 17 Wagenfabriken (2,264,928 Doll.), ferner Hausratfabriken, Brauereien, Druckereien. 1903 verarbeitete die Versandschlächterei 930,000 Schweine. Die Stockyards (Viehhöfe) fassen 35,000 Schweine und 4000 Rinder, die Getreideelevatoren 1 Mill. Bushel. Der Wert des steuerpflichtigen Eigentums betrug 1902. 132,927,210, die städtische Schuld 2,561,400 Doll. 1819 gegründet, wurde I. 1825 Staatshauptstadt, hatte aber 1840 nur 2700 Einw. und gedieh erst im Eisenbahnzeitalter zu seiner gegenwärtigen Bedeutung.
