Hornfels, ein sehr hartes, dichtes Gestein ohne alle Schieferung, meist von dunkler Farbe, ein Umwandlungsprodukt von Tonschiefern und Grauwacken im Kontakt mit Granit. Es besteht aus Quarz, Magnetit und Biotit oder Andalusit, Granat, Turmalin, Cordierit; danach unterscheidet man: Biotithornfels, Andalusithornfels, Granathornfels etc. Vgl. Metamorphismus.
