Hornby, Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps, brit. Admiral, geb. 1825, gest. 3. März 1895, Sohn des Admirals Sir Phipps H., der unter Nelson als Leutnant an Bord der Victory diente und sich in den Kriegen gegen Frankreich auszeichnete, trat im Alter von zwölf Jahren als Midshipman (Seekadett) in die englische Marine und rückte bis 1869 zum Konteradmiral und 1875 zum Vizeadmiral auf. Während des russisch-türkischen Krieges war er Befehlshaber der Mittelmeerflotte, erzwang die Durchfahrt durch die Dardanellen und stationierte sich unweit von Konstantinopel bei den Prinzeninseln; im Frühjahr 1880 wurde er von diesem Posten abberufen. 1881–84 war er Präsident der Marineschule in Greenwich; 1884 befehligte er die Marinestation zu Portsmouth, und seit 1886 war er erster Marineadjutant der Königin.
