Guanīn (Aminooxypurin) C5H5N5O oder

findet sich im Peruguano, in den Exkrementen der Kreuzspinne, in der Pankreasdrüse, im Fleischsaft, in der Milz und Leber der Säugetiere, auf den irisierenden Schuppen oder Schwimmblasen von Fischen etc. G. bildet mit Xanthin und Sarkin eine Gruppe von Zersetzungsprodukten des Eiweißes, die zwischen letzterm und dem Harnstoff stehen. Bei einer Krankheit der Schweine (Guaningicht) finden sich im Fleisch Konkretionen von G. Es ist amorph, farb-, geruch- und geschmacklos, unlöslich in Wasser, Alkohol und Äther und bildet mit Säuren, Basen und Salzen kristallisierbare Verbindungen. Mit salpetriger Säure bildet es Xanthin, mit chlorsaurem Kali und Salzsäure Guanidin, Kohlensäure und Parabansäure. Die auf den Fischschuppen vorkommende Verbindung von G. mit Kalk dient zur Darstellung künstlicher Perlen.
