Gilliss, James, Astronom, geb. 6. Sept. 1811 zu Georgetown in Columbia, gest. 9. Febr. 1865, gehörte 1827–33 der Kriegsmarine der Vereinigten Staaten an, studierte später zu Charlottesville und Paris, ward 1836 Assistent beim Depot of Charts and Instruments zu Washington und bald darauf Direktor dieser Anstalt. 1842 erwirkte er beim Kongreß die Gründung des Naval Observatory zu Washington und veranlaßte und leitete 1849–52 eine astronomische Expedition nach Chile zur Ermittelung der Sonnenparallaxe aus Venusbeobachtungen. 1861 wurde er Superintendent des Naval Observatory in Washington. Er schrieb: »The United States Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere during the years 1849–1852« (Washington 1854–58, 4 Bde.).
