Gelli

Gelli (spr. dsch-), Giambattista, ital. Schriftsteller, geb. 12. Aug. 1493 in Florenz, gest. daselbst 24. Juli 1563, war Strumpfwirker, widmete sich dann den Studien und machte so schnelle Fortschritte, daß er bald für einen vorzüglichen Schriftsteller galt. Zum Mitglied der Florentiner Akademie ernannt, hielt er Vorlesungen über Dantes »Göttliche Komödie«. Seine z. T. dialogischen Schriften zeichnen sich durch tiefere philosophische Anschauung, reiche Menschenkenntnis und klare, oft satirisch gefärbte Schreibart aus. Wir nennen: »Tutte le lezioni fatte nell' accademia fiorentina« (Flor. 1551 u. ö.); »I capricci del bottajo« (1548); »La Circe« (das. 1549; beste Ausg., Vened. 1825) und die Komödien: »La Sporta« und »L'Errore« (1555). Eine Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke erschien zu Florenz 1855, die »Lezioni sul Petrarca« Bologna 1884, die »Letture dantesche« Florenz 1887. Vgl. Ugolino, Le opere di Giambattista G.
