Freeholders

Freeholders (engl., spr. frĭ-hōlders) heißen in England die Freisassen, die freien Bauern, die Eigentümer der alten freien Bauerngüter (freeholds im Gegensatz zu copyholds, kassitische Bauerngüter) oder Inhaber von Nutzungen auf unbestimmte Zeit, wie z. B. ein Leibzüchter. Sie schieden sich früher in zwei Klassen, in F. von 40 Schilling Grundrente und weniger. Nur die erstern leisteten den Geschwornendienst und bildeten die wahlberechtigte Körperschaft in der Grafschaft.
