Erech

Erech (babylon. Uruk), eine der vier Städte des Nimrodreiches in Sinear oder Babylonien (1. Mos. 10,10), jetzt repräsentiert durch die gewaltigen Trümmerhügel von Warka, etwa halbwegs zwischen Hilla und Korna auf der linken Euphratseite. E. war einer der ältesten Sitze babylonischer Kultur; Stadtgöttin war Istar-Beltis (s. Istar). Die Griechen nennen E. unter dem Namen Orchoë als Sitz einer berühmten Gelehrtenschule. Die Stadt, die bis in die persische Zeit heilige Nekropolis war, umgeben zahllose Gräber.
