Egham

Egham (spr. éggĕm), Dorf in der engl. Grafschaft Surrey, an der Themse, gegenüber Staines, 26 km vom Hyde Park, mit (1901) 11,895 Einw. Dabei liegen zwei großartige, von dem Pillenfabrikanten Holloway gestiftete Anstalten: ein Sanatorium für Geisteskranke (seit 1885) und das Women's College (Hochschule für Damen, mit Gemäldegalerie englischer Meister, seit 1886), ersteres in gotischem Stile, letzteres in französischer Renaissance. Auf dem benachbarten Cooper's Hill liegt die 1871 gegründete indische Ingenieurschule. Längs der Themse erstreckt sich die Wiese Runnimede, unterhalb Magna Charta-Insel, wo König Johann 1215 den englischen Freibrief unterzeichnete.
