Die

Die (spr. dĭ'), Arrondissementshauptstadt im franz. Depart. Drôme, 425 m ü. M., an der Mündung der Mérosse in die Drôme und an der Lyoner Bahn, mit römischen Bauresten (zwei Toren, mehreren Altären etc.), einer ehemaligen Kathedrale (teilweise aus dem 11. Jahrh.), Schloßruinen, Mauern mit Türmen, einem 1891 errichteten Denkmal der französischen Revolution und (1901) 3241 Einw., die Weinbau (Clairette de D.), Seidengewinnung, Fabrikation von Tuch u. Kalk und Handel mit Holz betreiben. In der Nähe, bei Romeyer, finden sich Mineralquellen. – Im Altertum war D. eine Stadt der Vokontier in Gallia transalpina und hieß Dea Vocontorium; bereits im 4. Jahrh. war es Bischofsitz. Im 11. Jahrh. hatte die Stadt ihre eignen Grafen, 1178 aber wurde sie von Kaiser Friedrich I. dem dortigen Bischof geschenkt. Das Bistum, das 1276 mit dem zu Valence vereinigt ward, wurde 1687 wiederhergestellt, jedoch 1794 aufgehoben. Vgl. Martin, Antiquités de la ville de D. (1818); Mailhet, La vallée de la Drôme.
