Dasent

Dasent (spr. dēßent), Sir George, eigentlich Webbe, engl. Gelehrter, geb. 1818 auf der Insel St. Vincent, gest. 12. Juni 1896 in London, ward am King's College zu London und in Oxford gebildet und 1852 Advokat am Middle Temple zu London, dann Hilfsredakteur der »Times«, 1870 Mitglied der obersten Prüfungskommission (Civil Service Commissioner) und erhielt 1876 die Ritterwürde. D. gehört zu den gründlichsten Kennern des Nordischen, insbes. des Isländischen. Mit Vigfússen arbeitete er an der Herausgabe von Cleasbys »Icelandic Dictionary«; von seinen selbständigen Werken sind zu nennen: die Übersetzung der jüngern Edda (1842); »Theophilus in Icelandic, Low German and other tongues« (1845); »The Norsemen in Iceland« (1858) und ganz besonders die beliebt gewordenen »Popular tales from the Norse« (nach Asbjörnsen und Moe, 1859, 3. Aufl. 1888); »The story of Burnt Njal« (1861); »The story of Gisli the outlaw« (1866). Nebenbei schrieb er Romane und gab eine Sammlung seiner witzigen und humoristischen Essays u. d. T.: »Jest and earnest« (1873, 2 Bde.) heraus.
