Cuōco

Cuōco (Coco), Vincenzo, ital. Geschichtschreiber, geb. 1770 im Neapolitanischen, gest. 23. Dez. 1823, studierte die Rechte, betrieb aber zugleich mit Eifer Geschichte und Philosophie. Noch nicht 30 Jahre alt, wurde er durch die Verfolgungen des Königs Ferdinand IV. nach Frankreich vertrieben, nahm aber bald darauf seinen Wohnsitz in Mailand. Hier veröffentlichte er 1800 sein »Saggio storico sulla rivoluzione di Napoli«, worin er die neapolitanischen Verhältnisse des Jahres 1799 mit der Lebendigkeit eines Augenzeugen und doch unparteiisch schilderte. In seinem »Platone in Italia« (Mail. 1804; in fast alle gebildeten Sprachen übersetzt) stellte er in der Form der Beschreibung einer Reise Platons und Kleobulos' die Geschichte und die Zustände des alten Italien dar. Ende 1806 nach Neapel zurückgekehrt, wurde C. unter Murat Staatsrat und Schatzmeister (Direttore del Tesoro); als er aber 1815 die Rückkehr der Bourbonen mit ansehen mußte, verfiel er in Wahnsinn.
