Crofters

Crofters (von croft, zu einem Hause gehöriges Grundstück), in Schottland Feldarbeiter, die von ihren Arbeitgebern, den Grundherren, ein Stück Land in Pacht haben. Ihre klägliche Lage hat die C. zu ähnlichen Organisationen (Higland Land Law Association) gebracht wie die irische Landliga. Durch Gesetz vom 25. Juni 1886 wurden die rechtlichen Verhältnisse der C. geregelt. Danach können die C., solange sie ihre Pachtbedingungen erfüllen, nicht vom Gute verdrängt werden und können die Pacht einem Familienmitglied hinterlassen. Für Vollzug des Gesetzes wurde eine eigne Kommission eingesetzt, die in Streitfällen auch eine angemessene Pachtrente festsetzen kann.
