Crawford and Balcarres (spr. kraoförd änd bellkárs), Alexan der William Crawford Lindsay, Earl of, bis zum Tode seines Vaters (15. Dez. 1869) Lord Lindsay genannt, Gelehrter und Schriftsteller, geb. 16. Okt. 1812, gest. 13. Dez. 1880 in Florenz, wurde in Eton und Cambridge gebildet. Er war vielfach auf Reisen und rüstete 1874 auf eigne Kosten eine Expedition nach Mauritius zur Beobachtung des Venusdurchganges aus. Seine hauptsächlichsten Schriften sind: »Letters on Egypt, Edom and the Holy Land« (1838, 2 Bde.; 5. Aufl. 1858); »Lives of the Lindsays« (1840, 4 Bde.; 3. Ausg. 1858); »Sketches of the history of Christian art« (1847, 3 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1885, 2 Bde.); »Scepticism, a retrogressive movement in theology and philosophy« (1861); »On the theory of the English hexameter« (1862); »Conservatism, its principle, policy and practice« (1868); »Oecumenicity in relation to the church of England« (1870); »Etruscan inscriptions« (1872); »The earldom of Mar« (aus dem Nachlaß, 1882, 2 Bde.). Als Dichter versuchte er sich in »Ballads, songs and poems« (Übersetzungen aus dem Deutschen, 1841) und »Argo, or the golden fleece« (1876). C. hinterließ eine vorzügliche Bibliothek mit einer großen Anzahl wertvoller arabischer und persischer Manuskripte.
