Clairault (Clairaut, spr. klärō), Alexis Claude, Mathematiker, geb. 7. Mai 1713 in Paris, gest. 17. Mai 1765, las schon im 12. Jahr eine Abhandlung über neue Kurven vor der Pariser Akademie, wurde, 18 Jahre alt, auf Grund seiner »Recherches sur les courbes à double courbure« (Par. 1731) Mitglied der Akademie, führte 1736 mit Maupertuis in Lappland die große Gradmessung aus und teilte 1743 der Akademie seine berühmte Theorie von der Gestalt der Erde mit (»Théorie de la figure de la terre«, das. 1743, 2. Aufl. 1808). Nicht minder erfolgreich beschäftigte er sich mit der Theorie des Mondes (»Théorie de la lune«, Par. 1752, 2. Aufl. 1765). Auch schrieb er : »Recherches sur les comètes des années 1531,1607,1682 et 1759« (Petersb. 1762).
