Cairnes

Cairnes (spr. kǟrns), John Elliot, engl. Nationalökonom, geb. 26. Dez. 1823 in Castle Bellingham (Irland), gest. 7. Juli 1875 in Blackheath bei London, war anfänglich in der Brauerei seines Vaters beschäftigt, widmete sich aber seit 1848 an der Universität Dublin dem Studium der Rechte, wurde daselbst 1857 Professor für Nationalökonomie, 1859 Professor der Rechte am Queen's College zu Galway, 1866 am University College in London. C. gilt als der bedeutendste Schüler John Stuart Mills, dessen Lehren er weiter entwickelte in den Schriften: »The character and logical method of political economy« (2. Aufl., Lond. 1875); »Essays in political economy« (1873); »Political essays« (1873) und »Some leading principles of political economy« (1874, neue Ausg. 1883). Außerdem schrieb er: »The Slave Power, its character, career and probable designs« (1862); »University education in Ireland« (1866).
