Bruneau (spr. brūnō), Alfred, franz. Komponist, geb. 3. März 1857 in Paris, Schüler des Konservatoriums (Römerpreis vom Jahre 1881), lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit zuerst auf sich durch seine musikdramatischen Bearbeitungen der Werke Zolas: »Le Rêve« (1891), »L'attaque an moulin« (1893) und »Messidor« (nach »Germinal«, 1897). Noch nicht ausgeführt ist »Ouragan«. Auch komponierte er ein »Requiem«, mehrere Ouvertüren und symphonische Dichtungen und Lieder. Im »Messidor« setzt B. einen unrhythmischen Prosatext in Musik, ein Vorgehen, das mit Recht auf starken Widerstand stieß. B. schrieb eine Zeitlang Theaterkritiken für die »Revue contemporaine«, den »Gil Blas« und den »Figaro«.
