Brierley

Brierley (spr. braierli), Benjamin, engl. Volksschriftsteller und Dialektdichter, auch unter dem Pseudonym Ab-O'Th'Yate bekannt, geb. 26. Juni 1825 in Failsworth bei Manchester, gest. 18. Jan. 1896, Sohn eines armen Webers, erhielt nur eine dürftige Schulbildung und wurde dann selbst ein Seidenweber in Manchester. Zuerst Burns, später Shakespeare und Byron nährten seine dichterischen Neigungen. Nach dem Erscheinen der Prosaskizzen »A day out« und »Jimmy the jobber« (1855) gab er sein Handwerk auf und lebte seitdem als Journalist in Manchester. B. hat eine Menge Erzählungen, Lustspiele, Lieder veröffentlicht (vieles davon in der Mundart von Lancashire) und ist auch selbst als Schauspieler aufgetreten. Es seien erwähnt: »Tales and sketches of Lancashire life« (1863); »The layrock of Langley-side« (1864); »Irkdale« (1865); »Our old chimney nook, a Christmas story« (1868); »Ab-O'Th'Yate in Yankee land« (1887). Eine Gesamtausgabe erschien 1882 in Manchester. Als Darsteller des Lebens des Volkes in Lancashire hat B. eine bleibende Bedeutung.
